slice tool - when and how

i'm a beginner in photoshop so this might sound stupid but i gotta ask. how and when do you use the slice tool. i mean i'm think u need to put an image up on the web so u use the slice tool to 'chop'it up so it will load faster. is that one use? but i still don't know how to use it.
