What Google would charge you for would be advertising your site in the small banners that appear at the side and the top of search results. Getting your site listed is free. First, check with your host to see if they have a search engine submission available. If you control your site using CPanel (a very popular control system for web hosts), there should be button for this exact thing about halfway down the page. These options will help you submit your site to multiple search engines. If you can't find an option like that, go to www.google.com/addurl.html to submit your site to Google's search engine. Other engines should have similar pages, but you'll have to look for them yourself.
